Lada Niva Upgraded Axels Driveshafts Propellershafts
Upgraded Propeller Shafts

Removing a source of noise and vibrations

Driveshafts (propeller shafts) with CV joints eliminating a source of noise and vibrations transmitted to the cabin.

Fits Lada Niva VAZ 2121 all models.

Complete kit including both front- and rear shafts + CV-joints
Filled with grease, balanced and ready to mount.

A new developed set of driveshafts, utilizing special High Speed CV joints to maintain a uniform rotating speed.

Upgraded Driveshafts for Lada Niva
Picture:
Vibration created by the old type Universal joint. Very exaggerated, since shaft angels > 15˚ are impossible to attain with the Lada Niva.

How it works:
The problem with the old X-type also known as 'Universal joint' is, that when the join bends it results in a variation of the transmitted speed. And when operated at extreme angles it becomes 'notchy' and difficult to turn.
As you can see in the animated picture, the CV joint is like a bearing with 6 balls (6 contact points).
The angle between the two shafts is now divided into 2 half's (Red shaft to yellow balls + Yellow balls to green shaft). This reduction in angle combined with 6 contact points leads to a much more smooth transmission of speed.

Animation: How a CV-joint works
The CV joint used, is a not allowing enough axial 'plunge' movement of the shaft. The Shaft is therefore (as the old type is) equipped with a sliding splined connection.
This way, engine rocking and other vibrations do not preload the bearings and are not transmitted any further.

All together, this leads to an substantial reduction in noise and vibration.
If you have lifted/raised your Lada Niva, then the angle to the rear differential has further increased, and you would benefit extra from this kit.

Technical overview

Quality
The Steel quality of the Cardan-axels has risen from 32 to 40-44 units. (Increased the strength of 25,0 - 37,5 %)
The sliding spline connection is 90 mm long - This is 3 times longer then the old type (or a 3 times greater Area to transfer the force)
The slots of the splines have increased 20% in height.
The complete shaft (including the CV-joints) is designed to a maximum torque of 1500 Nm.
The CV-joints are standard from VAZ 21213 (was introduced in the VAZ 21213 and used in all Niva's hereafter)
The CV-joints lifetime is rated to 90.000 km (like in any car: Shorter if you drive harsh, longer if you drive soft)

Maintenance
The CV-joints does not require maintenance (no regular greasing is necessary), only visual inspections - like any other CV-joints.

Research and Development
There are many types of CV-joints available, and the CV-joints continue to evolve.
The first prototype of the Cardan shafts was developed in 2004 using a Renault 19 CV-joint.
They were put into production and available since 2006
The design has changed, improved and evolved since 2006. At least once every year improvements are implemented in the newest issues.
They are ALL tested in the factory
The previous type was based on a VW/Audi CV-joint with a long stroke of 'Plunger' and without the moving/sliding spline connection.
The latest type is based on the intermediate (layshaft) CV-joint from VAZ 21213, which is more durable in off-road, and designed to be used in high-speed propeller shafts.

Other features
The spline connection has increased from 30 to 90 mm. This opens for the opportunity of lifting your Lada Niva.
Lifting the Lada Niva more than 20 mm, will often require a longer rear shaft. But, since the spline connection has increased in length, this is no longer a problem. You can now lift your Lada Niva much more than the usual 20 mm.

The CV Joint is found in the sparepart catalogue, as part number 21213-2202016

Response from users:
We have received only good response from these Drive-shafts.
They really do remove a lot of noise and vibrations. When driving fast, the vibrations have almost gone.
